Barangay Profile: Barangay Calang Canas, Maluso, Basilan |

Physical Characteristics: Barangay Calang Canas is a coastal area located in the municipality of Maluso Basilan Province. It has a relative distance of 15 km rough road to the municipal town, and about 38 km from Isabela, provincial town. It has a total land area of 825 hectares. Of this total, 84.8 % are agricultural land, 5.5 % fishponds and 9.7 % are forest. Socio- demographic Data Barangay Calang Canas has 1, 360 (2000 census) total number of population, which composed of Sama, Yakan and Tausog, the majority tribe of the Islam Religion and Christian. Human Development Sector There are ten (10) individuals / community members, who have the skills in carpentry, three (3) tailors and two (2) Nipa roof sewers. Access to Information People from outside community can contact the barangay captain Flomer K. Jadji through his mobile phone (09104189581). Smart network can reach its signal to the barangay in a certain area like in the wharf. Sanitary Facilities and Ownership There are two comfort rooms, project given by the CCF. One is beside the Daycare center, and the other one is in the school which is intended for the pupils/ students and teacher. Hence, the barangay is a coastal area; community constructed their toilet along the sea. Access to Water Supply At the present, there is one unit of water system in the barangay given by the CCF. Common Occurring Illnesses Diseases that commonly occurred in the barangay are fever and flue, cold and cough, Tuberculosis, asthma, diarrhea, skin decease, measles, diabetes, and high blood. Health Facilities & Health Workers There is a Botika SA Barangay, a project from UNDP-3 but it was not sustain. There are three trained Barangay Health Workers (BHW) that give assistance to the medical/ health needs of community. At the present, CCF and the Maluso Project is an active NGO that give medical assistance to the barangay. Economic Development sector Farming cassava and banana, fishing, and seaweed farming are the common livelihood activities of the community. IDP families are also engage into seaweed farming. An estimated of about Php. 1,500.00 to 1,800.00 the average income of the families every month. Majority, houses are made of wood because they are accessible to lumber. There are also made of bamboo and nipa. Infrastructure Facilities The barangay have school building, with seven class rooms. Elementary level, from grade 1 to 6 and Secondary from first year to second year high school, National High School annex. Other infrastructures are the Barangay hall, which serve as the Multi purpose Hall, Daycare Center, learning center for children ages four to five years old. Solar drier for the harvested seaweeds and Mosque. Calang Canas is accessible by land and sea transportation going to Sumisip municipality. At the present there is only one regular jeepney transportation once a day from Maluso to barangay vice versa, with fare rate of twenty pesos. It took about an hour to reach the barangay from the municipal town and two hours from provincial town. Organizational Development Sector
