Breakfast Bars

4 cups oats
2 cups buckwheat, millet, wheat or barley
1 cup boiling water
8 tablespoons blackstrap molasses
2 tablespoons honey
4 medium egges with shells

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Put all ingredients into a large bowl. Mix with about 1 cup of boiling water. Make a sticky dough. Place in well-greased baking pan and cook at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Cool score into squares.

These keep really well and you can add a little dried fruit to it.

These are great when traveling to shows and little time to do everything. Perfect for picky eaters. They will put weight on your dog if you give them to many.

Here's a pretty low cal, wheat and egg free quick recipe.

1 32 oz. jar organic applesauce

2 cups water
2TBS unsulphered molasses (or raw honey)

Mix together and add:
4-7 cups brown rice, barley, amaranth or rye flour - the coarser the flour (rye, barley) the less you'll need If needed, add water to get a baking powder consistency - not sticky.

Roll out 1/4 to 1/2 inch and cut the biscuits (if you're like me you've already got four different bone shaped cookie cutters!) - the rim of a glass also works fine if you don't have cookie cutters Bake at 325 for 1-2 hrs (the thicker the biscuit the longer the cooking time), turn the oven off and leave in the oven overnight to crip up really crunchy.

Liver Brownies

1 lb. of calf or pork liver (I use chicken livers -- no cutting!)

1 cup of flour (I used whole wheat, but you could experiment with oat or white)
1/2 cup corn meal
3-4 minced garlic cloves
3 tablespoons parsley flakes (optional)
1 tablespoon brewer's yeast (optional)

If using calf/beef liver, cut into strips or small chunks first. Puree liver with garlic in a food processor. If your food processor can handle it, add the flour and corn meal and mix. If not, pour liver into a bowl and stir in dry ingredients by hand. Mixture should be thick...almost as thick as cookie
dough. If not, add a bit more flour to get this consistency. (If it seems too dry, add a bit of water or one beaten egg.)

Turn out onto a cookie sheet lined with aluminum foil which has been oiled.  Press flat and even. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Brownies are done when the pink is gone and still slightly soft. **Do not over bake or the
brownies will crumble. Take the brownies out and score with a sharp knife while still warm. For soft treats, leave as is and refrigerate or freeze unused portions. For crunchy kibble-like treats, return the cut pieces to the oven and allow them to dry while the oven cools off. "Bone" Appetite!

BTW, I worried about how these would smell when cooking. They really don't smell bad at all if you are generous with the garlic!

Dog Biscuits

1 cup beef liver, cooked and minced
2 or 3 cloves of fresh garlic, minced
2 1/2 cups water
1 teaspoon honey
1 Tablespoon active dry yeast
1/2 cup warm water

(for dissolving yeast)
3 1/2 cups all purpose flour
2 cups whole wheat flour
2 cups cornmeal
1 3/4 cups old fashioned rolled oats
1/4 cup wheat germ
1 cup non fat dry milk
1/2 cup brewers yeast

(optional, but some feel it helps to control fleas)
4 teaspoons iodized salt
3 eggs, beaten
1 egg beaten with 1/4 cup milk

(for brushing tops of biscuits)

Rinse and cut the raw liver into small pieces. Combine with the garlic and water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, cover the pot, lower the temperature to simmer and cook for 15 minutes. Remove from the stove and cool. When cool, grind or puree this mixture (water included) and set aside.

Dissolve the honey and yeast in the warm water and set aside. In a large mixing bowl, blend the flours with the cornmeal, oats, wheat germ, dry milk, brewers yeast and salt. Add the cooled liver/garlic mixture, the dissolved yeast and the beaten eggs to the dry ingredients. With a large spoon mix this together well.

Turn the mixture out onto a work surface which you've dusted with flour. Knead for at least 4 to 5 minutes. Return the dough to the mixing bowl, cover and place somewhere warm to rest for 15 minutes. Preheat the oven to 300 degrees and grease 2 to 3 cookie sheets.

Divide the dough into 3 equal parts and leave 2 in the bowl. Roll out the third with a rolling pin until its between 1/8 and 1/4 inch thick. Cut and shape into biscuits. Place these fairly close together on the cookie sheet. Repeat with the other 2 balls of dough. You may also chill or freeze whatever dough won't fit into your oven at one time.

Brush the egg/milk mixture over the tops of the biscuits and bake for 1 hour. Turn the oven off and leave the biscuits in the oven overnight, or for several hours, until they are dog biscuit hard.

These biscuits may be frozen in an airtight plastic bag.

Turkey Cake for Dogs

Yield: 20 Servings
4 lb Ground turkey
3 c Cooked brown rice
1 c Finely chopped carrots
1 c Finely chopped celery
1 c Minced fresh parsley
2 Eggs; beaten
3 tb Minced garlic
2 tb Olive oil
4 c Cooked mashed potatoes divided
Beet juice drained from a can of beets
Carrot rounds or shredded carrots

You can reduce this recipe to a smaller scale by using 1 pound of meat and cutting all the other ingredients by a fourth. The cake tastes good as it is, but people might want to add salt or other   seasonings.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease two 9-inch round or square baking dishes, or a 9-by-13-inch baking dish. (If using a dog-shaped cake mold, place it on a greased baking sheet.) In a large bowl, mix the turkey, cooked rice, carrots, celery and parsley; set aside.  In a small bowl, mix the beaten eggs, garlic and oil. Add to turkey mixture and mix well.   Add to baking dishes and bake 1-1/2 hours or until meat is fully cooked. Cool loaf. Reserve about 1/2 cup mashed potatoes; 'ice' the cooled loaf with the remaining mashed potatoes.  Thin the reserved potatoes with milk; add beet juice to desired color and pour into a pastry bag fitted with a round or star tip. Use to make decorations and to write the dog's name on top. Make rosettes and add carrot rounds or shredded carrots, or any other vegetable your dog likes. And don't forget the candles.
