| Waray... to most people who have been accustomed to hearing the word, there is an outright negative connotation attached to it. In the first place, the literal translation of waray is "wala", or in english - "nothing". Figuratively, and seemingly at its worst, those drunkards, gamblers, snatchers, prostitutes, etc., that we see littered in the city are always easily traced to the waray roots or those coming from the eastern visayas as either stow-aways, recruits or plain opportunists who come to Manila for an easy way out of their poverty. To be waray is to be poor, uneducated, trouble-maker,... "waray upay, waray batasan". These are the stigma that have been the burden of most samarenos and leytenos who tried their luck in the city only to find themselves stacked in the lowest echelon of society as maids, drivers, stevedores, factory workers, waitresses, etc. To add insult, these people are sometimes hired with contempt and suspicion once they are established to be a "waray", plus the miserable pittance they get. These ugly scenario is the definitive force that triggered a company of artists with waray roots, to group together with the challenge of being able to present another side of the waray face and to do their darn best to serve as good models for the young waray generation and the rest who shall came after. Pintor Waraynon is an artistic pursuit whose aim is: 1. To uplift the term "waray" into a more acceptable word as one no longer falling under the category of hoodlums or maids, etc., but that of expressive stance against typecasting through the visual, literature, music and/or other performing arts. 2. To help gather waray, or visayan artists in general, based in the province and in Manila and be able to learn from each other in terms of artistic and personal uplift. 3. To be able to bring to the province the group's collective output thus creating awareness among the people about the importance of the visual art not as a status symbol but an instrument of expression effecting awareness presented in lines, shapes, forms and colors. To date, Pintor Waraynon is composed of eight (8) members: Art Camarines Racquel "Racks" Dalangpan Gerald Grady Brian Lonop Gerry Navilon Ed Otis Oronos Noel Sagayap Ricky Torre |
