Green Lake

Well, I E-mailed one of our members 2 weeks ago to write the article but he never responded. Either he doesn't check his E-mail of he doesn't like Green Lake. So, in a clean-up role, I'll take a shot at this one.

Ahhhhh, Green Lake, it's one of my favorites. This lake has it all, depending on it's conditions during the dog days of summer. The weather has been dang near 100 the last few days and that water temp has to be warm. Not to mention our lack of rain tells me the water levels will be low. These two factors tell me a couple of things. The fish will need protection from the heat and light. On Green, there is a fair amount of shallow cover (wood, docks, slop, reeds) but it wouldn't surprise me if the fish swim deep to find the refreshing cool temps of deeper waters. You'll find some nice deep structure on Green. There are nice hard bottom stretches and a few rock piles littered across the deeper waters of Big Green. The steep drops around a few shorlines may also provide you with a window into the bass' home.

My fear for Green this time around is that the shallow water structure will show to be fruitless. Rob and I have our stretches on both Big and Little Green that can be productive. These stretches include all four major shallow water cover as mentioned above (wood, docks, slop, reeds). My gut tells me that the water level may be to low for the wood and the docks could harbor nothing but 85 degree stagnant water. The slop on the other hand intrigues me. It seems that no matter the weather pattern, slop always produces. I guess the bass has everything it needs in the slop - oxygen, cover and food. Green Lake has a ton of slop, how's your trolling motor? You'll need a good one that's on a full charge to navigate the almost weed choked bays, that in my opinion, could hold some of Green's finest.

So I guess the question is do you fish deep looking for the bass seeking the coolness off deep water or do you fish shallow hoping to tie into a pig that is cruising the mass amount of cover that Green offers? Isn't that the question, really, every time we hit the water? If you have the answer, could you let Rob and I in on it? We could always use some help.

Good luck boys!! Green Lake will determine this year's regular season champion.
