| MINK DAY 04/26/03 (Live @ Music Marathon *2 sets*, Tower Records, & Windows on the Cumberland) Finally after a month of waiting for it, the mighty Mink Day came. Four shows in one day.... could they do it? Mink had played the night before in Memphis, so it was really 5 shows in 24 hours. The first show of the day started @ 8:00AM @ the Music Marathon. How could a rawk show go on this early in the morning? The band members had very little sleep (a few hours at Most!), but they showed up anyway. It was freezing, early, and outside, but despite all the odds, Mink put on a very good and rare kind of show. The band opened with some cover songs with Aljon and Henry on vocals including bands such as stuff from Blink 182, Pearl Jam, & Creed. Jonda came up in a little bit, and they played some more covers from bands such as Hole, New Found Glory, SR-71(one of the best), No Doubt, and others. In the set, they also mixed in some new songs like "Communication"(which totally rawks!) and some of their own songs like "Girl 17," "Turn," "Candy Sweet," and others. After close to an hour and a half, they quit and the next band took the stage. After the other band (so sorry I can't remeber your name, other band), Mink came back on. They opened with a cover of Cheap Trick's "I Want You To Want Me." Then they played some more covers and originals. They played less this time probably because they were dead to the world. The 2nd show of the day was short but sweet. The next show was at Tower Records inside Opry Mills. Tower Records was nice and set up a very cool stage for Mink to play on. They opened with "Girl 17" and went through the usual songs. They said "Now That Your Gone" will be on the next record. That will be great, I hope "First Date" makes the cut too, which they did play at this show. After about 45 minutes, Mink was done and Tower Records had been rawked more then it ever had been. The last show of Mink Day was probably the best of the day. Windows on the Cumberland is just a great place and you can tell Mink loves playing the place, especially when it's packed like it was tonight. The Del Giovanni Clique opened the show and played their own brand of funk rap rock. They had a good reaction from the packed place and had much energy. They played for an hour, and then it was time for Mink. They opened with the usual "Girl 17" and went straight into "First Date"... very cool. They played a lot of the regular songs but a few surprises were in and out of the set. JoJo made his debute as a rapper at the show. Bass P came up and backed him up as they ripped though that emeinem 8 miles song. Henry played drums on this and Andy took the Bass. It was a very cool, cool thing. I don't like too much rap, but it was really, really great. It was definitely better then the original. Then, as another suprise, they played the new song, "Communication", which is very rawking. They closed with "Now That Your Gone." The crowd wanted more, so while Jonda went off the stage into the crowd, Aljon took over the duties in a cover of Ah-Ha's "Take On Me." Then, the band thanked the crowd, including actually mentioning Cass and me personally by name. It was a great closer for a great day. After a day like this one, it really shows that Mink needs to make it. I don't know too many bands that would even try to play 4 shows in one day (but actually 5 in 24 hours), but Mink did. They did it and did it good. It was one of the best days ever, and anyone who missed it, you missed 4 great shows. |
