Evangelion is such a powerful series because it forces you to look at what man would do when faced with the threat of extinction, knowing that they have one way of preventing it even if that tool could defeat them in the end.
It shows just how stupid the smartest person can be, just because they are human.
Evangelion, given the chance, can really make you think about yourself as a human being. You may say "oh, its just a cartoon, how can it do something that can effect you this way?" All I can say is that Eva is more than your typical anime, its just like reading a good book to some people, you carry its lessons with you unto death.
There are many secrets locked away within evangelion which noone but the creators may understand, which is one of the ways this series is so great. Many subtle actions, things and events can give you a lead on what the director is trying to portray. Most of these things are to increase your feelings about the characters.
