Found this while connected to the Gnutella network:
-----= NOTICE =----- BearShare has been identified as containing "SPYWARE" by www.spychecker.com and others. BearShare supposedly installs programs called "Onflow" and "Savenow", did you know that? Goto the Bearshare site, go to the documentation section, then to the FORUMS. In the forums goto the area called Adware. (if its still there) This is not a joke, go read about the adware/spyware they installed on your system. Spyware/Adware will not kill you but its definately not cool. Are they reading your hardrive? Did you know they were on your system? Do you care? Have you read the fine print in the BearShare user agreement? Disable the spyware & keep bearshare. Bearshare is a great program... but... Gnutella can exist without bearshare. Say "Vinnie pls deflate your head" SURPRISED? GO CONFIRM. SHARE THIS FILE SO OTHERS KNOW. SPREAD THE WORD.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - [ 11.April.2001, Editor's Note] I found this to be true on my computer.
Every once-in-a-while an add would pop up on me so I checked it out and there it was.
I didn't make the connection until I got this message, but the timing fits.
To see for yourself, go to control panels, add/remove program.
Messed up, huh?

Added: 1-16-01 Lime Wire is a fully functional Gnutella client written in Java, and has versions available for Windows, Macintosh, Mac OSX, Linux, Solaris, and any other OS with a JVM or JRE.

Lime Wire is the easiest way to connect to the Gnutella Network and share any kind of computer files you want, including mp3s, word processing documents, pictures, games, movies, recipes, and more.

It is very important for users to upgrade to this version. Why?

This version of LimeWire is the first Gnutella client to totally block website and web browser access. These users are not sharing content on the Gnutella network but they routinely use 50% or more of the download availability. This is what causes most Gnutella user downloads to fail. If we all do not take steps to improve content sharing on the network, the present download situation will not improve. Currently, new users to the Gnutella network all to often become discouraged when unable to download content and they leave.

We've also added a lot of cool new features in this version, including:

- Built-in client update capabilities
- Display search results from extended-protocol clients
- Web browser upload blocking
- Fixed Macintosh performance issues
- Connection cleanup fixes
- Handle rmj and lmt media file types

In addition, Lime Wire 1.0 still has all the same great features from the last version, 0.6d Beta, including:

- Gnutella groups
- Advanced customizability
- Gnutella "Good Citizen" features
- Network tiering
- Upload incompatibility fixes
- Improved library functionality
- Forced IP functionality
- Connection preferencing
- Reflector compatibility
- Improved startup time

Added: 1-12-01 Below is a message posted by a member of the LimeWire development team regarding network performance.

I think nick is entirely correct. In the early days, web based gnutella crawlers didn't exist. I actually built one myself (using the LimeWire backend plumbing) but never brought it online because it would promote file downloading without file sharing. Sadly, the fact that (non-pushed) download requests are pure HTTP requests, means that pure browser indexing is very easy.

I believe that we are going to solve this problem with a future version of LimeWire. We are currently building altruistic detection into the client and will be working with ToadNode and BearShare to adopt these types of measures.

We seem to have done a fair job even now at breaking the modem bandwidth barrier. You should note that you can see more hosts in your horizon now and your search requests are promptly answered with many files. I believe that this is due to a combination of connection preferencing at the client level and smart network configuration that is being done by router.limewire.com. This will get even better over the next few months and allow the network to scale into the 100's of thousands of active users (which is a good thing not a bad thing). Any thoughts on this are appreciated.
