| Frankenstein (1931) is the screen version of Mary Shelley's Gothic 1818 nightmarish novel of the same name is the classic horror monster film. Carl Laemmle Jr. produced the movie with Victorian undertones for Universal Pictures, the same year that Dracula was produced, within the same studio. The name of the movie derived from the crazy, obsessed scientists name, Dr. Henry Frankenstein, who produces an artificial life, which in the end terrorises the Bavarian countryside. However, most people still think to this day that Frankenstein actually refers to the monster played by Karloff, but this is untrue, a slight flaw which obscures the overall picture of the film to the majority. But significantly, the film launched the career of actor Boris Karloff who was un-credited in the opening titles, but was credited in the closing titles. Like Dracula, Frankenstein went down in history as one of the most famous and greatest horror movies of all time. Also like Dracula, it has been spoofed to beyond the afterlife and back, but has also set a solid stone in the wall of American horror movie history. |
