| Dracula (1931) Directed by Tod Browning and taken from Bram Stokers novel published in 1897, this is one of the earliest classic American horror films from Universal Pictures. The first film of the story of Dracula was the unauthorised silent German film, Nosferatu: A Symphony in terror (1922) directed by the expressionist, F.W. Murnau. Hungarian stage actor Bela Lugosi, who had starred in the smash-hit Broadway play of Dracula, took over the part for the film when Lon Chaney died. He established himself as the definitive screen vampire. Its eerie lighting, gliding camerawork, and shadowy atmosphere was the work of Karl Freund, the cinematographer. This film stands as a classic amongst the horror genre and is Lugosis best part. Spoofed by many a film, Dracula has also influenced a string of hammer horror greats as well as modern Hollywood spectacles such as Interview With A Vampire. |
