"Why?" she sullenly implores,
"Why have they done this all to me?
I never wanted much from them,
Only life, only to be."
She puts the knife at her wrist
And tells me she wants to die.
"If only I were immortal.
If by you I could lie.
"You have the gift I want,
But each day you tell me 'no,'
I need you, my prince,
Or I will surely go."
So in my darkest hour,
I bestow to her my gift,
And all my pain and suffering,
My deep dark void, my darkest rift.
She must hate me deeply now,
But she returns to me a kiss,
And so much love is in her eyes.
Her reason I must have missed.
"Why?" I quietly ask her.
"You should hate me for what I've done,
For now you'll spend forever
In dark hideouts from the sun.
"Your world is total blackness,
Your life eternal pain."
"But I've got you, my prince,"
She says as the sky begins to rain.
"You've given me forever
In your touch of purest love.
I want to be beside you,
No matter what falls from above.
"Your love is what I asked for.
Your love is what you gave.
Your curse is just a side-effect
To have what I'll always crave.
"I love you more than life,
And I'll never leave your side.
With your darkest kiss, you've made
An immortal loving bride."
Quite startled by her tongue,
Not sure just what to say,
I ask again the query,
"Why? Why me today?
"Why would you choose the warrior
With the dark and horrid face?
Why, you could choose your fancy
With your beauty, your angelic grace.
"It's just the dark gift you sought."
She stares with affrighted eyes.
"How dare you speak such horrors?
I chose from all the lands and skies.
"I care not how you look,
But only how you look upon me.
It's your beautiful heart I love,
Your gorgeous soul I see."
"But I'm not the thing you want,"
I argue still, pushing away.
"My heart opens only to you.
It's not the beauteous thing you say."
"Oh, my prince, I wish you'd see,
I've loved you since the first.
It's not your blood I needed,
But your love has quenched my thirst.
"I want to be with you forever,
And you can't make me leave.
Our love has formed a bond,
One that can't be cleaved.
"Please don't push me away;
I'll only come back each time.
We can make such beautiful music;
If I'm a verse, you're my rhyme.
"It can be only us eternally,
You know that as much as I.
I know you love me as I love you;
The tears in your eyes, I'm why you cry.
"So the final question is before you:
Will you take me or run and hide?
Will you love me for all forever?
Do you promise to keep me at your side?
"I see it in your eyes, my prince.
Your answer I need not guess."
Her smile is so soft and warm,
And then I breathe a whispered "Yes."
