Punctuation Marks

Every punctuation mark is very important in a Pascal program. The program would fail to work without it.

Semicolon (;)

• appear at the end of the program heading
• used as a separator between statements, in the declaration part and program body
• need not used before the reserved word end

  Colon (:)

• used as a separator between variables and their data types

  Comma (,)

• used to separate items, expressions or variable in a list

  Single quotation marks (')

• a pair of single quotation marks is used to enclosed a character or a string

  Period (Full-stop) (.)

• is placed after the last reserved word end of a program
• used to stop the program

  Brackets ( )

• used to enclose the argument list

  Braces { } or (* and *)

• used to enclose the comment
• comment simply a message that gives the programmers information about the program
• for example,
  • { This is a comment.
    It can continue over several lines. }
  • (* This is also a comment *)
