Group donates blankets to children in need

A Minerva resident has started a local chapter of Binky Patrol. a national, volunteer non-profit organization which makes and give blankets to children in need.
Brandy Miller is the local Minerva area coordinator for the Binky Patrol. The recipients for these handmade blankets range from one day to 18 years old. Those who are i11, abused or experiencing trauma receive binkles.
Binky Patrol was started in May, 1996. by Susan Roush of Laguna Beach, Calif. She saw a need above raising funds for hospitals and shelters. The children in these hospitals and shelters are frightened and without familiar surroundings, Roush explains. They need to have something of their own to hold onto when they wake up in the middle of the night crying or before they receive one more treatment for cancer. They need to know someone cares and is always thinking about them.
Miller needs more volunteers in the Minerva area to make the blankets for these children.

Binkies can he any size from three feet square and up as well as made from any pattern. The blankets can be sewn. knitted, crocheted oi quilted. The only requirement is that they are soft and washable. So far more than 72,000 children and teens have received binkies across the country.
Volunteers range from the four-year- kids that hand paint squares for binkies up to a 94- year-old great-grandmother of 10 in the Midwcst. Scouting troops, schools, churches have all started chapters across the country for community service projects and to learn about compassion.
To join this effort or to find out other ways to help the Minerva area chapter of Blinky Patrol, please call Brandy Miller at 330- 868-6477 or e-mail at Minerv[email protected], Anyone interested may contact the national headquarters at 949-499-BINK, e-mail at [email protected] .
