The Rei in our minds: Rei is the silent introverted girl. This makes her mysterious to the others around her. She exists for the sake of others and will sacrifice herself if ordered too. However, this is not an act of altruism but of duty. She is like a statue, beauty and strength frozen in perfect stillness but unlike a statue, she has a heart beating within.

The Shinji in Rei's mind: We can only guess what Shinji is to her. In the beginning, her only link to humanity was threw Shinji's father. Nevertheless, as time goes on a strong bond grows between them. They share many personality traits. They are shy and quiet, to the point of not knowing how to act in social settings. Both have known pain from loneness and have learned to live with it. As they work together, Shinji express concern for her and she cannot help becoming intrigued by him. She does not understand his motivations for his acts of kindness and friendship but are grateful for them.

The Rei in Shinji's mind: Shinji is not as hard to read, as Rei but his view of her is uncertain. Shinji finds her attractive, blushing when he is caught looking at her. Rei has little contact with others before Shinji came. He sees that she is alone and wants to change that because he is also alone. Threw his efforts to talk with her, he creates a complex bond between them. He gets her to smile and he talks with her, mostly about life or Eva. He wants to protect her from harm and worries when she needlessly risks her life.

Shinji and Rei Ikari: The Shinji Rei pairing is the second most common in Eva Fanfiction. There is one major point critics drag out when Rei and Shinji are paired together. She is a clone based on his mother, thus she could be his sister. But, the relationship between the two is more spiritual than physical. They can be said to be the closest people on the planet, having touched each other's memories and soul. The deep bond is used to justify the relationship in most fics. However, most people find the Shinji and Rei relationship uncomfortable to deal with. Don't make Rei suddenly filled with emotion have her feeling grow, don't get me started on how much I hate the OOC stories with Rei acting all emotional.
