The Misato in our minds: With others Misato is optimistic, cheerful, and fun. While working, she is decisive, innovative and efficient. In private, she deals with the scars of her past, silently and alone. Sometimes the reasons why she fights are misguided and she neglects her duties as a guardian. She wonders if the only reason she is with NERV is to avenge her father's death. She drinks to excess and can be considered an alcoholic. She cares deeply for Shinji and breaks into tears when she losses him. She is always willing to sacrifice herself.
The Shinji in Misato's mind: At first she is torn between seeing him as a tool to defeat the angels and seeing him as a person who deserves the chance to a normal life. Her first impression of him is of a child, following other people because he had no will of his own. However, as he grows he becomes less of a child, slowly shaping his own path without being forced in to situations. She wants him to reach his full potential both in life and Eva but he keeps away from other people and running away from problems.
The Misato in Shinji's mind: Shinji does not know what to make of Misato. He sees both sides of her at home and work and is at awe at the differences in behavior. There are four different ways Shinji views her. First she is his commander, ordering him to 'Get in.' the Eva and to fight the angel. Second, she is his guardian; she watched him and made sure he was taken care of. Third, she was a friend who treated him as a person with feelings. The forth is one of woman, while he denies it, as a young hormone high boy he can't help being attracted to her. With all of her roles, their bond is exceptionally strong and complex.
Shinji and Misato Ikari: The Misato and Shinji pairing is not common in Eva Fanfiction. The main reason is the age difference, Misato being twice his age. I don't know about Japanese law but in the US, if a 29-year-old woman became involved with a 14-year-old boy it would be statutory rape. Nevertheless, if you ignore the age differences, they might make a good couple. They have deep feelings for each other, of which they don't completely understand. The pairing is strange but do able. Most start late in the series when Shinji is his pushed beyond the limits of sanity or they start with Misato's break down.
