The Maya in our minds: Maya is cute, period. Maya works for the tactics department of NERV. In the series, she is 'devoted' to Ritsuko. She assistants Ritsuko in researching EVA technologies, even those she disagrees with, like the dummyplug. She does not like violence, sometimes becoming sick at the sight of it. She is a gentile soul who is misplaced within the steel doors of NERV.

The Shinji in Maya's mind: Maya thinks Shinji as a pilot. She knows that he does not want to pilot and feels empathy but she does not know what to do. At first, she does not understand why he stays but she comes to accept that he just does what he is told to do.

The Maya in Shinji's mind: Shinji does not have any feeling for her.

Shinji and Maya Ikari: The Maya and Shinji pairing is very rare in fics. First, there is the fact that they have nothing between each other in the series. Second the age difference she being 23 and he being 14. However, if you ignore the age differences and the fact that in the series they don't 'belong' together, they would make a cute couple. They look nice together and the age thing in not as bad as with Misato. The pairing is very different needing a lot of plot change to Eva to make it happen or even possible. Twist the timeline so they spend some time together. If they had a chance of becoming closer than they might have developed more.
