The Kaworu in our minds: He was the mysterious, intelligent, strange boy that showed up one day while Shinji was looking at the destruction of Tokyo-3. We hear him whistling "Ode of Joy" and see him sitting on a beheaded statue of an angel. After making a comment on the creation of music, he introduces himself to Shinji as the Fifth children meant to replace Asuka as the Pilot of Unit-2. They talk and start a strange friendship.

But he was in fact the 17th angel Tabris sent to NERV by SEELE. Like the angels before him, his goal was to return to Adam. However, Tabris was the angel of free will and thus able to make his own choices. This made all the difference in the end.

After a demonstration of his unbelievable abilities to synchronize with an Eva, he and Shinji spend some time together talking about life and pain. After a few days, Kaworu takes control of Unit-02 and heads to Central Dogma. Unit-01 goes after him, as Shinji shouts that Kaworu betrayed him. Kaworu uses Unit-2 to hold off Shinji while he heads for the mysterious creature on the cross. Kaworu thought that the creature on the cross was Adam but he relies that the being on the cross is in fact Lilith. This is when he chooses to let Shinji kill him because life and death are the same for him and that humans should have a future. Shinji in his Eva were silent for about a minute, until he squeezes and kills Kaworu.
