The Hikari in our minds: Hikari is the girl next door. She is so sweet but very authority centered. At first, her character puts us off but she develops as the story goes on and she grows in her depth. She is also one of the few sane characters in the series. She is friends with Asuka and has a crush on Touji toward the middle of the series.

The Shinji in Hikari's mind: Shinji is a shy friend to her. While they are not very close friends, they do get along.

The Hikari in Shinji's mind: Hikari is just a friend. He does not develop an interest in her in the series.

Shinji and Hikari Ikari: I have to say that in most fics that involves Hikari the most common pairing is with Touji. In the series, they don't come together but if things were twisted a bit here and there, they would make a nice couple. I think they would have the more stable relationship of any pairing. The pairing is not difficult to do but you do need to change the relationship early in the series. There are many places where they could have developed something. Nevertheless, there is the problem you will have with the Touji/Hikari supporters.
