The Gendou in our minds: Gendou is the dark and cold commander of NERV. He cares only for his own agenda and regards others as tools. He will use anyone and do anything to get what he wants.

He used his wife's connections and name to gain access to SEELE and its resources. He returned to Japan a day before second impact, knowing that the Katsuragi expedition would start it. He pushes forward with the Human Completion Project just for the sake of reuniting with Yui. He even managed to convince Kouzou not to expose what he found out about Adam and SEELE, and instead join NERV. He had an affair with Dr. Naoko Akagi, because he needed her to complete the Magi super computers. Then he used his wife's DNA to create Rei. After Naoko dies, he has an affair with Ritsuko, because he needed her for Project E. He then used his son as a pilot for Evangelion Unit-01 after years of abandonment.

Overall, we want to think that he is Satan but Satan was never human. We know that at one time someone (Yui) found some worth in him. Nevertheless, he has forsaken all for something that was not meant to be.
