Touji is recovered and taken to the hospital. Shinji decides to leave NERV for good. As he waits for his train the next Angel attacks, Shinji can only stand by and watch in horror as the Angel defeats both Asuka and Rei with ease. Shinji, realizing what he must do, after talking to Kaji, takes control of Unit- 01 and fights the Angel in a most horrific battle. In the end, Unit-1devours the Angel including its S2 core, giving it unlimited power. In the process, Shinji is absorbed into the Evangelion and must fight for his very life from inside the Evangelion itself. This episode goes threw the days Shinji is physically fused with Evangelion Unit-01. They attempt to recover him from Unit 01 but fail. However, when a crying Misato runs out and sobs over Shinji's empty plug suit, Shinji returns from the Evangelion.
