The dark and secretive Committee reviews the activities of the Angels. This is interrupted by the news that the NERV Branch 2 in America has been destroyed, with it the new Evangelion, Unit 04. This makes finding a pilot for the new Evangelion Unit-03 extremely important, but the identity of the new child is a complete shock. The first test with the new pilot, Touji, turns into a disaster as the Evangelion turns out to be an Angel. It destroys the base and heads to Tokyo-3. When they send Asuka and Rei, to battle, they fail to stop the Angel. Shinji then must face the Angel/Eva alone. Shinji battles the Angel but he cannot make himself hurt the pilot trapped inside the Angel. Gendou activates Unit-01's autopilot (dummy plug system); it tears the Angel apart and crushes the pilot.
