In the first episode, we see Shinji standing at a payphone. At the same time, an Angel is attacking Tokyo-3. The Angel almost stomps Shinji but Misato slides in and saves him. At NERV, he sees his father for the first time in years. He is told to pilot Unit-01 and fight the Angel. Shinji does not want to pilot it until he sees that they will send Rei (who is badly hurt) out to fight. The episode ends with Shinji being launched inside Unit 01 to face the Angel. The next episode begins with Shinji waking up in a NERV hospital. After being released, he is assigned to live by himself but Misato feels he needs somebody to be with so she takes him in. Shinji is shy when they first reach the apartment. They settle the house chorus and Shinji meets "Pen Pen" Misato's pet penguin while in the bathroom. Alone in his room he remembers the battle with the Angel. It started badly, he falls and the Angel picks him up and smashes his head, and crushes his arm. The Evangelion then goes out of control, heals its injuries, and starts to beat up the Angel. The Angel tries to destroy Unit-01 by self-destructing. However, Unit-01 survives. It ends with Misato telling Shinji that he should be proud of what he did.
