NGE: The Splitting of the Soul

Author's notes: It starts at the end of Episode 20 when they try to get Shinji back. I will
try to keep them in character but I reserve the use of creative license.

Prologue: In the beginning...

Deep within the Earth, in the cavern Nerv called home the command room was filled
with noise as they prepared to retrieve the pilot of Unit-1. Misato walked down a corridor
to reach the room where she first learned what happened to her Shinji and where she hoped
she would get him back. It was not the first time she had lost him but it was the longest;
for a month now he was lost within the Eva. As she closed her eyes, her body tensed up as
she remember the battle with the last Angel, how he came back to fight and in the end to eat
the Angel. She remembered the shock she felt as she saw inside the plug for the first time
and the anger that grew at those she deemed responsible for her lost. She placed her hand on
her cross as she open he eyes to stair at the purple monster. She said a silent prayer and
lets go of her cross, letting her hand fall to her side. She enters the room under the gaze
of the commander.

As Misato and the others fought to bring Shinji back another struggle was going on
inside of the monster called Unit-1. Within the Evangelion was Shinji, his mind a jumble, he
felt nothing, without a body or knowledge of where he was, all of his thoughts swirled
around him bleeding into each other, strange visions of the past and present plagued him in
ways beyond description. He just wanted everyone to be nice to him. Then suddenly within the
void came the three most important people in his life, floating toward him.
"Tell me Shinji. Do you want to be one with me? To be of one mind and body? It could
be very nice. Ask me any time I'm always ready." said a seductive Misato.
"Hey, Shinji idiot. Don't you want to be one with me? To be of one mind and body? It
would be awesome. You ought to appreciate your good fortune. Come on!" Asuka said.
"Ikari. Do you want to be one with me? To be of one mind and body? It could be
very... pleasant" Rei said in whisper like voice.
"Shinji, Do you want to become one with me?" says a naked Misato.
"To be of one mind and body and soul?" says a naked Asuka.
"It could be very pleasant," says a naked Rei.
"Relax and free your soul." they said in flowing unison voices.

Shinji's mind was racing everywhere yet went nowhere. What did he want or whom did
he want? He could not choose between them and he could not hurt the others for the sake of
one. He felt as if he was being pull in all directions. Each woman had a place in his heart.
He trusted and cared about Misato. She was the closest person in his life since his first
day in Tokyo-3. Asuka was also in his heart, even if it pained him like daggers every time
she lashed out but there were times when she would be perfect and he would be mesmerized by
her. Rei had a special place in his heat, she had a strange calm around her, and when he was
with her he felt as if he knew her from some other time. He had a answer, "Yes" he let out
and tried to sink into the warmth.
Then it hit, it ripped him from his last thoughts. Outside they were starting the
retrieval process.

Everyone was busy, except for one person, Misato Katsuragi. They were going to
reconstruct the body and soul of the pilot. An impossible task but with the MAGI they had
a chance of succeeding. All was calm on the outside but inside everyone was a powder keg
of emotion ready to explode. They worked nonstop for a month and now the moment of truth.
Operators and technicians all checked and rechecked systems till the operation was ready.
"Roger. Signal-1 is sent."
"Eva received the signal."
"Signal-2 and signal-3 are now sent."
"Subject's catharsis is normal."
"Destrude isn't detected."
"Roger. Move the target to stage-2." Ritsuko directed them.
"Come on Shinji..." Misato sighed.

Shinji gasped each time he heard the voices calling for him. He could hear everyone
calling for him over and over again. He could not make sense of all of it, the voices kept
speeding up and changing he could not take it, he had to escapee he had to runaway.

There are things that you know by instinct. Even if you don't have a clue what was
going on, when people begin to shout and franticly do thing, you know that things are not
going well.
"It's no good! His ego border is in a fixed loop!" Maya in a reserve shouted.
"Try to radiate all wave patterns from all directions." Ritsuko tried to remain calm.
"Hai!" Maya typed as fast as she could.
"No good. The radiated signals are captured in Klein space." Ritsuko.
"What does that mean?" asked Misato, she could have guessed but she need to know.
"It means... we failed." she had failed "Stop the interference, Reverse the tangent
graph. Set the addition value to 0."
"Hai!" Maya
"Destrude reaction is detected in Q area. Pattern is sepia." Shigeru
"Changes detected in the core pulse. Plus 3 is confirmed." Makoto
"The water temperature is rising, 36, 38, 41, 58,76, 97, 106..."
"Maintaining the present condition is top priority. Prevent flow-back." Ritsuko had
to stop this.
"It's going over the estimated value. It's reaching dangerous levels."

"What do you want?" says a naked Misato.
"What do you want?" says a naked Asuka.
"What do you want?" says a naked Rei.
"What do you want, Shinji?" says a dark figure.

In the real world, everyone was a lost to what had gone wrong. They had tried
everything and more that but not only did they fail they had started something that they
could not stop.
"Hai! Plus 0.5, 0.8... it's strange... I can't stop it! My God! The Eva is rejecting
the signal!" Maya shouted.
"Don't you want to come back?" Ritsuko looks at the Eva with a questioning gaze.
"Shinji's ego formation in the LCL is breaking up!" Shigeru
"The pressure inside the plug is increasing!" Makoto
"Abort all operations! Cut the power supply!" Ritsuko tried to stop this disaster.
"Too late! The plug has activated!" Maya she looks up at the Eva.
"Shinji!" Misato gasps, all were still.
The hatch of the plug opened, it pours LCL out of the hatch. Shinji's plug suit
floats out and silently glide down to the catwalk along with the fluid. Misato runs to Eva
and quickly grabs the plugsuit, seeing it empty she falls to her knees. She clutched the
suit in her hands and starts to cry.
"What's good with your god dame science it can't even save one small life." her
cries are muffled by the plugsuit.
"GIVE ME BACK MY SHINJI!!!!!" She yells out to the Eva. "GIVE HIM BACK!!"

He was back, he knew this place, he was beginning to understand the images, they
became clear and he began to understand. He was with the Eva but, did he come back? Did he
pilot the Eva? He saw Misato she said the strangest things about how he came here, that he
piloted Unit-1 and that he could not deny it.
He felt another and he saw another. The light returned it was warm it reminded him
of someone, it had a smell, was it Misato no, Ayanami no, it was his mother. Then he
remembered something very distant very long ago it might not have been his own memory but he
remembered it. His heard his mother and father talking and deciding what name to give their
child, him. He knew where and who he was with. Mother....
"SHINJI!!"

The core hums for a second, and then a bright light fills the room blinding all eyes
electronic and otherwise. When Misato looks up her heart skipped, it was a total shock,
there before her were three bodies on the platform. All three looked like Shinji.
Men rushed in wearing contamination suits. They wheeled in stretchers and gathered
the unconscious forms on the platform. The did their jobs with little attention to her. She
remembered little after that.

There was familiar voice calling her name. She felt a hand on her shoulder shaking
her. She turned her head and saw Ritsuko.
"We thought we lost you." she said.
"What?" she was still trying to process what happened.
"You were out of it for some time," she looks at her watch "the first wave of tests
should be done by now."
"What was that?" she points to where the three were "and what about tests?"
"It means you can see them if you want." Ritsuko gives her friend a hand up.

It was a fairly normal sight for Misato. Shinji was in a isolation room sleeping.
Every time he had a possible contact with a Angel or had a problem with his Eva he was in
one of these rooms. Except this time she knew that, there were two other Shinji in two
different rooms.
"What are they?" Misato asked, going straight to the point.
They ended up in Ritsuko's office. Misato was leaning against a wall and the doctor
was sitting in her chair behind her desk. The room smelled of coffee and cigarettes.
"All the tests were a match for Shinji's. We are running a DNA analysis to confirm
that they are Shinji, and that there is no Angel or Eva contamination."
"Which one is the real Shinji?" she didn't let up.
"My guess is that if they have the same DNA and memory anyone of them can be called
Shinji. This is new for me." she lied, she had many years to think about this subject.
"..." she stops to think, she tried to be positive. Shinji was alive. But in such
a condition that he might not be the same ever again.
"When will we have the results of the tests?" asked Misato, snapping out of her
thought.
"Tomorrow no later. I'll inform you when they get in. You should go home."
"No, I want to be here when the test are done." Misato need to know. Ritsuko gives
her a small nod of understanding. She leaves the room and heads down the hall. This had
been an emotionally draining day. She wanders into the infirmary and finds a bed to
sleep in.

"Hey wake up." Ritsuko starts to shake her friend in the bed.
"What? Why?" Misato stirs in the bed.
"You need to get up, the results are in." Ritsuko informs her.
Misato shots up at the news, like a rocket. She slides off the bed and is
standing in no time.
"What are the test results? Are they really Shinji?" she asked quickly.
"The DNA matches perfectly for all three." she said as a matter of fact.
So, they were Shinji. Her Shinji. "Do they... remember anything?"
"Their memories are probably intact. There is no brain damage. But we have to wait
for them to wake to tell," Answered Ritsuko, "They are still unconscious."
"When will they wake up?"
"They should wake in the morning, they are just tired. We will be moving them out
isolation before they wake, you can visit them then."
Misato felt increasingly hopeful of the situation.
"How long was I out?" her body was still tired.
"Well you slept for a day," Ritsuko smiles.
"WHAT!!!" she looks at her friend with disbelief.
"Don't worry, I would sleep for a week after a month of all of this, lest go home."
"Yeah, home" Misato and Ritsuko leave the room and head out of the infirmary. Misato
had a meeting to get to and Ritsuko had a few hours of rest and she was going to use them.
