The Asuka in our minds: Asuka is egoistic, self-righteous and full of pride. She never wants to lose and has a strong self-reliance and determination to takes on all obstacles. She has all the strengths and flaws of youth, reckless and brave throwing herself to limits of everything. She is haunted by a painful past that despite her passion she can't escape from without help.

The Shinji in Asuka's mind: When she first meets Shinji, he was just a dull boy but his uncanny ability to pilot Eva made him a dangerous adversary. She thinks that he does not have a spine because he does what people what him to do and she is completely frustrated with his passive nature. But when she thinks she has him figured out he does something that changes her view of him. Threw all their time together she becomes closer to him but refuses to admit to herself that she needs his help.
Asuka and Shinji
The Asuka in Shinji's mind: In the beginning Shinji could only see an egoistic, self-righteous, spoiled girl. He tries to be nice to her but he always becomes the target of her anger. But when he trains with Asuka, he starts to see through the layers she puts up. Shinji knows that Asuka has a side she keeps hidden from other people. She has an inner strength that makes her able to face all challenges, which he admirers.

Shinji and Asuka Ikari: The Asuka and Shinji pairing is perhaps the most common and accepted in Eva Fanfiction. But opponents point to the fact that they fight and argue with each other. Supporters say the fighting is a front to their true feelings. The main reason why they don't get together in the series is their fear of being hurt. They need each other but Shinji can't confront Asuka with his feelings and Asuka can't let down her defenses. In most fics, one or both of them find the courage to tell the other their feeling and they get together. Another idea used, has one breaking down mentally and then finding support with the other.
