Characters in Emma

Emma Woodhouse

"Faultless in spite of her faults". By the novel’s end, she has also broken her promise to her father. An arrogant, rich bitch. She is Quasimodo to her father’s Claude Frollo. She likes to make matches

Miss Jane Fairfax

Not much is known about her, except that she turns out to be secretly engaged to Frank Churchill. It is also known that she repulses Emma. There is no equivalent to her in Amy Heckerling’s 1995 movie Clueless, but she is most like the character of Amber in the movie.

Mr Knightley

Emma’s sister’s brother-in-law, George Knightley is a man of some respect. His ISTJ (Introverted, Sensing, Thinking, Judging) personality is a perfect compliment for Emma’s ENFP (Extroverted, Intuitive, Feeling, Perceptive)

NB: ENFP and ISTJ type personalities are determined by the Keirsey Personality Sorter at www.keirsey.com

Harriet Smith

As clueless as you can get. Harriet is the "natural daughter of nobody-knows-who", having been found at the back of Miss Goddard’s School. Her starsign is Cancer, implying a shrewd and cautious character, however, Harriet is most definitely not a typical Cancerian.

Mrs Bates

Another of Emma’s rivals.

Miss Bates

No info available, one of Emma's rivals.

Isabelle Knightley

Emma’s sister, also George Knightley’s wife. She has five children:

Miss Taylor

The first match Emma made—to Mr Weston before the novel began

Emma Story

full story

If anything makes Emma Woodhouse happy, it’s keeping others happy. And what better a way to do this than making matches? When orphan Harriet Smith arrives in town, Emma decides to make her over. Then she decides on the perfect match: Mr Elton. However, after that backfires and Emma realises Mr Elton was in love with her, she meets Mr Frank Churchill, who, it turns out, was secretly engaged for quite a while. Things look grim for Emma, but there’s always her sister’s brother-in-law, Mr Knightley, who seems VERY single, and always wanting a relationship…….

Fool for Love Characters

Eddie

Likes to be the one in control. However, the rôles are reversed when he returns from his fling with the Countess

May

Loves her life after Eddie. Hates the fact that her husband/half-brother had gone off for a fling with the mysterious Countess. Has a new lover, Martin, a SNAG (Sensitive New-Age Guy). Is forced to manipulate Eddie.

Martin

The SNAG. Comes for a good time with May, ends up being victimised and controlled by Eddie.

Old Man

Eddie’s and May’s father, he’s as sexist as Eddie is. He had two women in his grip, but lost both of them before he died. May’s mother committed suicide—with a shotgun.

Fool For Love Story

In a hotel room on the edge of the Mojave desert lives May. She is in control of her life: she has a job. When her incestuous husband/half-brother Eddie returns from a fling with a Countess, he attempts to be the one in control. All this is made worse by the memory of the "Old Man" and the appearance of Martin, May’s new lover. (Fool for Love is based on a real-life incident involving the play’s author Sam Shepherd and his fling with actress Jessica Lange—who plays May in the movie).
