Meeting Minutes for October 16, 2001

MENC General Meeting
Room 107, Ferguson Hall
Oct. 16, 2001 7pm

1. Meeting called to order by Lynn Marano at 7:05
2. Lynn talked about the upcoming elections for leadership positions in the organization. Anyone who is       even vaguely interested in running for president elect (a
two year commitment where the first year is
spent working closely with the current president, Carrie, learning the ropes to take over the next year)
secretary or treasurer (one year commitment) should email one of the current officers to get put on
the ballot. Besides having fun working with a great team of people, gaining leadership and organi-
zational experience and being connected to the heartbeat of music education at the U, it can certainly
help your resume stand out from the crowd. The election results will be posted by November 6 with
ballots available a week or two before that. Newly elected board members must be available for the
first meeting on January 22, 2002.
3. Dr. Teachout gave some information on the Praxis I and Praxis II tests required for teacher certifi-
cation in Minnesota. The Praxis I assesses the "3 R's" of basic education and no one who made it into
the U should have any trouble passing. The other test assesses our subject area, namely; music. The
first portion is a content test, concerning music history and theory. It is recommended that you com-
plete these sequences before attempting the test. The other part of Praxis II is a pedagogy and you
should complete some of the junior year music ed. classes first here as well. He handed out registra-
tion materials, a schedule of testing dates throughout the year and two booklets of sample questions.
Pick these up from him in his office if you missed this. He stressed the importance of taking the
tests this year because this is a "guinea pig" year where there is no passing/failing cutoffs. Everybody
who takes it this year passes and gets certification. We are setting the curve for the next year of
teachers, so any schore will do, but at least a nominal effort should be made since the test enter our
    portfolio.
4. The Minnesota Collegiate MENC Clinic takes place on the 26th and 27th of this month (Friday and
Saturday) in Moorhead, Minnesota at Concordia University. The exec. board will attend and anyone
else in encouraged to join. We will be arranging transport and will be accommofated in dorms for Fri-
day night. Dean Sorenson and other dynamic speakers will be the highlight of the sessions. Lynn
Marano needs your completed registration form (get it from Dr. T if you still need one) and a $15
check (that is REFUNDABLE upon arrival) by Friday at 3:30 in order for you to go. Once you have
these materials together, drop them off with Nancy in the Room 100 office and tell her it's purpose so
    Lynn can pick those up.
5. Thanks to the members who attended the meeting. Have a great week.
