| CMENC University of Minnesota January 30, 2001 General Meeting Minutes Ferguson Hall, Room 107 Executive Officers Present: Lynn Marano, Carrie Backman, Steve Schmitz, Tark Katzenmeyer Active Members Present: Josh Anderson, Betsy Kearns, Nick Castonguay, Stacey Brake, Chad Bieniek, Liz Pemberton ****Thank you all for coming! I apologize if anyone was missed. 1. Meeting called to order at 7:05 under direction of Lynn Marano. 2. MMEA Conference: a. Though the deadline for early ($5) registration has passed, please contact any executive officer for information, registration forms, etc. b. Talked about the need for all going to the conference to PLEASE record which sessions you went to which were beneficial and relevant so MENC can tailor our clinic sessions toward these areas. 3. Eddie Bauer: a. Congratulations and thanks to those who worked and helped to raise $200 for the chapter. 4. Conducting Forums: a. If anyone else is interested in helping run the forums, please contact one of the executives. Josh Anderson and Julie Lingle have so far expressed interest. A group of two or possibly three would help the job be enjoyable and not too time-consuming. 5. Committees: a. Social Committee: Talked about organizing an MENC Starlight/Cosmic Bowling outing for the first Friday of March (3-2). An hourly rate would make it a cheap and fun experience. Start spreading the word about this and the early May barbeque at Dr. Haack's house. 6. Upcoming Clinics: a. Clark Sheldon will be giving a talk on "Ten Things I wish I had Known Before my FIrst Teaching Job." (This talk will also be given February 16th, 3:40 to 4:40, so if you are going to the con- ference, this will open up that time to see other sessions.) b. Talked about Prof. Luckhardt giving a talk in April about his unique use of student leadership. c. Talked about an upcoming clinic on resume/portfolio building. This is especially important since several members will soon be embarking on this process. d. Please e-mail Josh Anderson with any clinic ideas you may have. 7. ***Rally at the state capitol: a. Stacey Brake talked about a Feb. 14th rally (from 11am to noon) at the capitol to protest Jesse Ventura's proposed drastic reduction in U of MN funding. This would lead to a 10 to 15% tuition increase among other negative things for us. b. There will be a "dignified" march talking place at the rally. If any MENC (or other) marching band members want to participate to show our support, please e-mail Stacey or Lynn. c. Any other musical groups (quartets, quintets, etc.) that would like to play there to show School of Music support would be very welcome. d. Papa John's pizza will be on sale at the rally for a price of $5 per whole pie. 8. Talked with Stacey Brake about her student teaching experiences: a. Talked about restructuring of Music Ed. program b. Future separate music major sections of the EDHD classes c. A new 3 semester long instrumental methods sequence will let us have much more real experience before student teaching. d. Stacey stressed the importance of starting to build a portfolio now. This means "don't throw any- thing away!" Hold on to well-written papers, application essays, letters of reccomendation, etc. 9. Summer Program at UW-Madison a. Carrie Backman talked about a two-week summer music program in Madison where college students work as CA's and sectional coaches for junior and high school kids. E-mail her for more information. 10. Adjourned: 7:43 |
