| CMENC University of Minnesota December 12, 2000 Clinic Meeting Minutes Ferguson Hall, Room 107 Executive Members Present: Lynn Marano, Molly Colten, Julie Lingle Active Members Present: Carrie Backman, Paul Terry, Sean Smith, Andy Richter, Jaime Thomalla, Elizabeth Kerns (attendance may not be completely accurate) 1. Meeting commenced: 7:13 pm, Dr. Teachout 2. Michael Hiatt introduced by Dr. Teachout 3. Handouts a. "Perpich Center for Arts Education: Arts High School, Professional Development, Research" b. "Linking Minnesota Graduation Standards Profile of Learning: Arts to the Frameworks for Arts Curriculum Strategies" c. "Arts Education Research, Assessment & Curriculum," Volume 4, Number 1 d. "The Arts High School: School Profile 2000-2001" 4. Clinic a. Mr. Hiatt's personal background b. Background on the Perpich Center 1. structure of the school day/week 2. how it meets graduation standards for arts 3. ensembles c. Professional Development Institute 1. called attention to "Research, Assessment & Curriculum" d. discussed thinking of music education as a profession and an art form e. importance of curriculum, even though music education is product oriented f. teaching students to be lifetime consumers of music 5. Questions a. Andy Richter: how to bring energy to you program 1. Response: kids need to find their niche and are drawn to music becuase it's small and the teachers care-therfore, think of ways to break things down and nurture students b. Jaime Thomalla: is there crossing over of arts disciplines in the Perpich Center 1. Response: one weakness of the school, but there is a period in the middle of the week for students to explore other arts areas c. Betsy Kerns: why no large ensembles 1. Response: limited number of people because there are 300 students split equally among the 6 arts areas 6. Dr. Teachout's reasons for inviting Mr. Hiatt to give clinic a. challenge members present to think of ways to create the same energy in arts school in a more traditional school setting |
