The Art of Voodoo Flags

As a fiber artist, I use sequins and beads in my work. The embellishment of an object is a highly significant aspect to my pieces. I have been beading hearts, bones, and the human body. One of my professors told me that Haitian art has a long history of incorporating sequins and beads into their work. So, researching more in depth about Haitian Vodou flags seemed like the most logical way to go. I specifically chose a flag which represented a purple skeleton. It was a two dimensional form of the way I had been working. However, to fully understand this textile, I discovered that one had to delve into the history of Haiti, itself.
