Zakspeed was formed by Erich Zakowski. He brought his racing team into formula
one 1985. The team produced its own turbo engines that were not very competitive, however
it was able to get one points finish, Martin Brundle's
fifth position in San Marino in 1987. Once turbo engines were banned for 1989, the
team turned to Yamaha power. The V8 was hopelessly slow and unreliable, and only competed in a few
races all year. Most of the time, they failed to pre-qualify. After this disastrous season, Zakspeed
no longer had the West sponsorship funding to continue in F1.
Based on their results, this team did last much longer than they probably should have.
The company still exists
and it has fielded several cars in the 24 Hours of Le Mans for Porsche, and is now involved with CART
racing in the US.
