Spirit was formed midway through the 1983 Formula One season. They made
their debut at their home race at Silverstone with an up and coming young driver
named Stefan Johansson. The team was chosen as the factory team to run
the new Honda Turbo engines for 1983. Unfortunately, the team struggled,
and Honda was not convinced that their engines were as slow as what the
performance of the Spirit suggested. For 1984, Honda moved on to Williams
and quickly established themselves as the engine to beat. Honda's Turbos,
which evolved from the 1983 Spirit models, went on to dominate the late 80's.
Without a factory engine, the team fell back to customer Hart engines for
1984. The small one-car team continued to struggle. They did manage to finish
eighth on four separate occasions, but were never able to crack the top
six. The team only made it three races into the 1985 season before
deciding to call it quits.
