AGS was formed in late 1986 and took part in two rounds of the World Championship. In 1987 it was one of the many smaller teams who ran with normally aspirated Ford DFV engines and competed for the newly designated "Jim Clark Cup". Unfortunately, the team only managed one sixth place finish, and were beaten by many of the other non-turbo teams.
1988 was more of the same. The chassis was very simple and undeveloped, and the car did not look much like an F1 car. As a result, any promising performances were due to the skill and determination of their driver, Phillipe Streiff, and not the car.
Tragedy struck AGS at the beginning of the 1989 season. Streiff crashed heavily at a pre-season test at Rio, and suffered severe neck and spine injuries. He is still a paraplegic today. The team fielded Gabriele Tarquini as a replacement for 1989, and he stayed with them until their last race in 1991.
From 1989 to 1991, the team barely ever made it into the races. Often, they failed to make it past pre-qualifying. The team was in constant financial crisis, and rescue bid after rescue bid seemed to hold the team back from any real progress. Though Tarquini was a constant, the number two driver changed often to try and generate some sponsorship revenue. The efforts never succeeded, and despite the constant bail-outs and pay drivers, they were never able to be competitive. The team folded a few races before the end of the 1991 season.
