The voice came over the walkie talkie in hushed tones, sightly muffled by fabric. "Roger that." Came the reply. "He's exiting the mall. South exit. Move, people! Move!" The command was accepted and acted on in seconds. Men and women in bullet proof jackets seemed to leap out of no where, guns drawn and ready. They completely surrounded two men, just far enough back to give the pair space. The first man was obviously a lacky. Dressed in a simple black suit with black sunglasses covering his eyes, he looked surpised. The other man was dressed in a far more expensive suit, but he would have to be, for he was Darien Shields, the most sought after crime boss in the United States. "Freeze!" Darien turned to face the cop who had spoken. He was holding a simple black folder, which he switched to his other hand before raising an eyebrow at the police. "Darien Shields, you are under arrest." The officer felt a certain amount of triumph, being able to tell the criminal that. Darien was almost untouchable. Whenever he was on his own property, the police were unable to get him. Finally they had gotten him on their own territory. They were taking no chances. "Am I?" He asked. Silence fell over the mall. Civilians had been lead away by plain clothes officers. Everything was in a stand still, but something was coming. You could taste it in the air. A small child was weaving his way through the crowd and officers. Everyone was so focused on Darien that they never noticed as the child ran towards Darien. Darien dropped the folder and knelt down to greet the child. The police misunderstood the action and opened fire. There was one casualty. The child. "Hold your fire! Hold your fire!" The officer in charge shouted. "Get an ambulance in here stat!" Darien held the small body in his arms, hugging the boy to himself. "It'll be okay Jonathan. It'll be okay." Darien whispered. "Darien..." Jonathan gave Darien a weak smile before his eyes rolled back. Darien clutched his younger brother's lifeless body to his. "Sir, we need to get out of here." It was one of his own people. They had moved in and cleared a path for Darien to escape. Darien was unwilling to leave his brother behind, so carrying the child, he was led out of the mall to the black cars that would escort him to his estate just outside of Los Angeles.
