Zelgadiss Greywords
He starts off in the series as a bad guy. You never see his face, and he's surrounded by freaky people like Zolf, "The Mummy Man"; and the bearded swordsman, Rodimus, as well as Dolgear, the Half-Troll, Half-Werewolf. Not to mention the fact he attacks our beloved heroine, Lina Inverse. The man seems strange, mysterious...but..not evil. Perhaps misunderstood.
In the beginning, Zel is searching for the Philosopher's stone, and even Rezo says Zel is "pure evil". Of course, Rezo seemed to forget the old proverb.. "Psycho priests harboring pieces of dark lords in glass houses shouldn't throw stone chimeras.".. (Ok, so I changed it a little bit..)
However, Zel joins sides with Lina. (Yay!) and eventually ends up saving their asses a couple times. He even kills two fishmen. (Noonsa and Rahinimu) Of course, he helps out when they kill Rezo/Shabby and also when they fight the Kopii Rezo. He uses shamanistic magic mostly (Including..dun dun dun..the Ra Tilt!) and the explanation we came up with for his name is.. Black (Magic) + White (Either White/Shamanistic Magic) = Grey + Words (Magic) = Greywords. ^_^V
There's the whole Zelgadiss/Ameria thing that happens throughout the series. My opinion? It could be one of two things. She could have a schoolgirl crush on him, and he could think of her as a little sister, or yeah, they could be totally and madly in love with each other. I doubt that, but hey, you never know. However.. Zel/Lina? No. They'd rip each other's head off. Zel/Xellos? As much as that turns me (and several of my friends) on..I highly doubt that...Zelgadiss would probably rather dropkick Xelloss off a large cliff onto some pointy rocks than to kiss him.
His family (besides Rezo) is hardly mentioned, if not at all, but you guess that he used to be a rich kid. In one episode of TRY, while rebuilding a temple, Ameria comments on Gourry's enthusiasm, whereas Zel complains a bit and mutters "Well, he was born to do this kind of work.." Plus, he had his two servants follow him.And from what I heard in "More Than Words" (Damn song made me cry), he kept to himself after he recieved his new body.
In the first season, Zel was voiced by Daniel Cronin up until he returned in Vol.6 to fight the Kopeii Rezo. Then it was my beloved (^_^) Crispin Freeman (Click on the link for a picture..Kawaii! ^_^), who does the voice for Next and Try as well.
