Volume 3 Issue 1 - January 7, 2005 http://www.geocities.com/freeguahan [email protected]

Hafa Adai, yan welcome to i mina'sais na Minagahet.
Sahuma is busy starting off a new school year, so I get to play editor this issue.
For Tun Antonio Sablan's article I originally wanted to title it, "Rethinking the US military in Guam," but then I thought about how the PDN online and KUAM online (my main sources for info about Guam) tend to discuss the issue, and realized that we have to think about it before we can even begin to rethink it. The military gets the ultimate pass from Guam's news media, and never seems to get discussed as anything but pennies from heaven. Its really time to start thinking about it, and the damage it may cause. Tun Antonio's piece is an excellent exploration of this issue.
A couple great books have just come out recently about Guam and Chamoru issues. Most notably, Colonial Dis-Ease: US Navy Health Policies in Guam, 1898-1941 by Professor Anne Perez Hattori from the University of Guam. Its a really great text which disputes a lot of the ways we've traditionally thought about or been socialized to think about the pre-war era of Guam. It wasn't the golden paradise of progress which Carano and Sanchez claim and many of the manamko' remember. It was instead a time of colonizing and Americanizing which Chamorus actively participated in, as well as resisted. I've linked the title to Amazon.com so go ahead and check it out.
Don't forget to visit out message board, FANAHGUE'YAN. We've had a couple weeks of everyone agreeing with each other, so we're really looking for some new blood to fokkai things. And even though he's too busy to get an issue of Minagahet together, Sahuma is still posting on his blog, No Rest for the Awake.
