Who Are They?
Too Phat is a rap duo that shook the Malaysia music scene with the release of their debut album, "Whutadilly" and their recent "Plan B" has managed to earn them a platinum award for sales.
Secret Identity:
Their real names are Johan Ishak (Joe) and Malique Ibrahim (Malique). Joe is currently pursuing his advertising degree at local creative college, Lim Kok Wing while Malique is doing his 'A' Levels.
Birth Date & Place:
Joe comes from Subang and is 24 years old while Malique, who is only 22, is from Muar, Johor.
Headquarters:
Currently, both the boys are living in Kuala Lumpur and they are signed under the Positive Tone banner.
Guilty of:
They were nominated for a few awards at this year's AIM and while they didn't manage to bag any awards, these boys gave a stunning performance! And the lads are also guilty for that infectious tune, "Anak Ayam" (you may recall the music video that shows them being apart of a "Phat"Station game).
Criminal History:
Well, the Internet does more than just allow you to keep up with what's happening, it also brings musical acts together, and this is exactly what happened in Too Phat's case. Two boys chatting online realized they shared one common interest -- the hip-hop culture.
They challenged each other to rap and rhyme in chat rooms and before long, realized that this could just be it. Joe and Malique met up and soon produced a demo which landed them performances at underground gigs. All this happened two years prior to the release of their debut effort, "Whutthadilly?"
Reintroducing the trends of hip-hop to Malaysians, they soon realized their following was growing by the day. Many people wanted to hear and see the two boys perform and soon, their un-mastered studio mix of "Lil Fingaz" became hitz.fm's Most Wanted Hit at the end of November 1999.
After getting some money, they managed to record their first album that soon lead to a recording deal with Malaysia's finest independent label, Positive Tone. They welcomed the new millennium with a big bang; "Whutthadilly?" secured a spot on the Tower Record Charts.
In early 2001, Joe and Malique released their second album, this time one that was closer to home, with more Malaysian beats and hearty raps. The effort, "Plan B" has done nothing but gained them even more fans. Roping in veterans like Sharifah Aini, it's no wonder the album has sold over 25,000 copies in Malaysia alone.
Recent Sightings:
Joe and Malique are currently busying themselves with many performances and live shows. Most recently, they were seen cranking it up at the ERA Awards. The boys are also in discussion with hip-hop apparel brand FUBU, where the guys are looking into endorsing the brand. We hear the meetings are looking very promising! Next up, the guys will be seen at the Bintang Popular Awards, where they have also been nominated.
