OLD MORENCI HIGH SCHOOL

Looking East at old Morenci High in 1943

This school was built in 1919 and it's where my mother graduated from high school. In 1948, the year before it was torn down, I attended kindergarten in the basement of this building.

The old high school was unusual in that it had eight half-stories, each with its own ground entrance.

My mother remembers the thrill of the fire drills on the school's old spiral type fire escapes.

My Aunt Annie was the last one in the Díaz Family to graduate from here.

The old Morenci High School was torn down after they built the new Morenci High School where I graduated. At the site of the old building, they built the Humbolt Elementary School which was unusual in that the playground was on the roof.
