Getting to Know the Campus – Tips on Stanford Culture

Welcome to the highly intellectual and warm-weather world of Stanford University. Located in the heart of Palo Alto, California, close to Silicon Valley, and a short ride from San Francisco, this University is in a key location. Stanford students, however, spend most of their time content in their own, beautiful, sprawling campus. The culture here is shaped by competing forces of Californian usual life and Ivy leave intensive academia. While it is possible to write a lon essay on Stanford's culture, below are just a few notable aspects of Stanford University student culture.

  • Beware of bicycles when walking or driving on campus. Most students travel by bike, and at a rapid pace. With such a large campus and unusually nice weather, every day is a good day to cycle.
  • If you're looking for the popular place for lunch, stop by any dorm. Students here eat in their dorm communities for all meals. Faculty and grad congregate in Tresidder Union, the student campus center.
  • Dorm life is central to all Stanford students, making the student leadership position of RA (Resident Advisor) once of the most important on campus. Get in with the RAs if you want the chance to hold events in dorms, and therefore, truly meet students where they are at.
  • Because Stanford runs on a quarter system, everything happens fast. As soon as the quarter starts, mid-terms begin. And, the work load is always heavy. Getting used to the rhythm of the quarter is essential to successful programming at Stanford.
  • Stanford is good at all sports -- take the time to check out the athletic events to get a feel of Stanford culture.
