E-mail Announcement to Friends and Family
April 21, 2005

Dear Friends and Family,

We need to tell you some difficult news.

About three weeks ago, lung cancer was discovered in Mimi's right lung.  It is inoperable.  As a consequence, we will be pursuing chemotherpay next week.  We are fortunate enough to be located close to two leading research institutions, Stanford and UC Davis, that have very active research programs for this type of cancer.  We will be enrolling initially in a clinical trial to test the effectiveness of a new monoclonal antibody therapy (think ImClone, Martha Stewart, etc.) in conjunction with more standard treatements.  Our hope is to stay close to the cutting edge of research so that we can take advantage of the tremendous innovation that is occurring in the field.

Each day we try to balance realim and optimism.  We are helped by the fact that Mimi looks and feels very well.  Looking at her, it is difficult to believe that anything is worng.  This week, for example, we went on a 3.5 mile hike and Mimi's been playing catch and basketball with the girls.

We're staying close to home --both of us are on leave for now-- and trying to maximize the time we have with family and friends.

We will keep you informed as things progress.

Love,

Mimi and Bob
