| Dear First Grade Families, Many of you know that Mimi has lung cancer. We want to thank you for the support that you have been giving our family. It has made a difficult time much easier for us. Some of you have asked what to tell your children about Mimi's illness or have expresssed concern about discussing it in front of our children or yours. We thought it might be helpful for you to hear what we've told Elana and her sister Maya (entering Kindergarten next year): 1. Mimi has lung cancer. It is a serious illness but Mimi plans to get well. 2. You cannot catch lung cancer from another person. You did not cause the cancer. (Mimi didn't smoke). 3. The treatment, which will take a while, kills the bad cancer cells, but also kills some good cells. As a result, Mimi's hair will fall out, but it will grow back when the treatement is done. Also, Mimi may be more tired and limited in her activities. We feel comfortable about you discussing this with your children. If you have any questions or perhaps aren't sure how to answer your child's questions, please feel free to contact us. We recognize that the school community can be affected by this. We are grateful to be part of this wonderful community. Bob & Mimi |
