The Obituary of Thomas H. Thompson

The many friends of Thomas H. Thompson were unutterably pained by the sad intelligence that he had died at the residence of A.F. Hill, his brother-in-law, Monday morning, 4th inst. (4 January, 1892). He had been ailing for several days, but none of his friends apprehended serious results, believing that he was suffering from a slight attack of la grippe, contracted by exposure in the performance of his railroad duties. On Friday, however, pneumonic symptoms supervened and his friends realized that he was very sick, and that the attack would result fatally. All that the skill of physicians and the tender care of a loving sister and friends could do for him was done, but every effort was unavailing and he peacefully passed away in the early morning of the 4th inst.
Few men enjoyed greater esteem and friendship than the deceased. All who knew him appreciated and esteemed him on account of an amiability which was natural to him, while his courteous regard for others arose from sterling goodness of heart. Of a cheerful disposition and a spirit averse to hates, his frank and honest face was always pleasant to look upon. He was always at his post of duty and careful in his attention to business details and he served his employers with fidelity and zeal. Honest and conscientious, earnest and industrious, his life was one of labor. His was the work of a true life and the memories this plain, earnest man whom we honor leaves behind him memories pure as his stainless life. May we not hope that the gate, stood not only ajar, but swung wide open for the admission of his disembodied spirit into that "house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens." To his bereaved sister and sorrowing friends we tender our heartfelt sympathy in their affliction.
