Nelly Thompson was the fifth and last child of Thomas and Telitha Thompson. She was born in 1846 while the family was still in Orange County, North Carolina. In 1860, after the family had moved to Wayne County, Sally was still living at home with her parents. When her father's land in Wayne County was divided among his children after his death, she received her portion. Nelly Thompson never married, but did have one child out of wedlock. The child's name was Josephine Thompson. In the 1870 Census Nelly is enumerated in the household with her sister Catherine Thompson Price. In 1880 Nelly is listed as head of household. Her daughter, Josephine, was in the household with her. Josephine was born in 1875, and married Thomas J. Potter of Lenoir County, North Carolina before 1895.
