9/1: Bees collect title The Killer Bees laid claim to the C League Championship despite a valiant effort by perennial contenders White Eagle. The Bees sqeaked by Game 1 by a score of 9-8. Game 2 saw White Eagle even the score with a 6-1 victory. The Bees, trailing in game 3, piled 12 runs on in the final inning...clinching their first C title by a final score of 22-12. 8/26: Bees survive scareIn Semifinal action, the Killer Bees defeated Millens 2 games to 1. In the process, Millens managed to do something no other team had done all year - send the Killer Bees home by the run rule. Millens lead Game 1 by a score of 8-6 in the 6th when costly errors gave the Bees a 10-8 victory. Millens roared back in Game 2, with a 15-3 drubbing. Millens was also leading in Game 3, 13-8, going into the bottom of the 4th. The Bees piled on 15 runs the next inning to end the game 23-13, and hence the series.
Millens' starting lineup was missing many regulars, including Fred Duffus, Mike Goodrich, Von Ahouse, Erik Fisher and Lou Denise. Irregardless, the Mutants piled on the hits. In the first inning, Charlie Glass crushed his second HR of the year into the treeline in center. The following inning Swim King pitcher Homer Weiss intentionally walked Glass with two runners on. Much to Homer's dismay the strategem backfired when Derek Snyder's double cleared the bases. Millens had a commanding 15-5 lead going into the bottom of the fourth. Swim King battled back to make the score 15-9. However Millens subsequently sent 17 batters to the plate in the 5th, scoring 12 runs. When Swim King went down quietly, the final was 27-9, guaranteeing Millens a playoff spot. Hitting standouts included Glass who had a 2B, 3B, HR and 4 RBI. Vega Phil Castiglione had his first career three hit game. Brothers Kevin Jones and Derek Snyder each had three hits, with Snyder tacking on 6 RBI. Tony Troccia coninued to fight his way back from a midseason slump with two singles and a double. Finally, Nick Denise stayed hot with his second consecutive three hit game. Around the league:
The Killer Bees staked their claim for first place with a 16-12 comeback victory. The Bees, down 12-5 going into the bottom of the 5th, put up a nine run inning to decide the contest 16-12. 7/28: Duffus rampage tames White Eagle Fred Duffus is on a mission to lead the entire City of Kingston in Home Runs. He took another step in that direction on Thursday. Duffus amassed two mammoth homers and seven RBI's in the first two innings Thursday as Millens pulled ahead early 11-2. However, White Eagle batted around in the 3rd inning to take a 12-11 lead. At the end of the third, Duffus blew out his arm and was relegated to catching duties. Millens limped into the bottom of the 7th with a miniscule one run lead. To start the inning, Duffus was sent back out to 2B for defensive purposes. With one out, Mike Rundle got things started for White Eagle with a base hit, and advanced to second on Ronnie Schmadel's fielding error. The next batter lined a single to left center, but Lou Denise managed to hold Rundle at 3B. Scott Liese then induced a Donnie Wells double play groundout started by SS Phil Denise. On the play, Duffus made a beautiful turn at 2B to nail Wells by a set, preventing the tying run from scoring and ending the game. Nick Denise continued his hot hitting with three hits and an inside the park home run, pushing his average to .600 on the season. Around the league:
Both American Legion and Millens came into the game riding three game win streaks. Legion started the game with a 2 run first inning. Millens erased the deficit in the bottom of the first on back to back homers by Fred Duffus and Charlie Glass, giving Millens a 6-2 lead. Legion came back to tie the game in the 2nd, scoring 4 runs. However, Millens was just getting started. Duffus' second homer of the game capped an 11 run 2nd inning. The game was stopped after 4, with the final being 18-6. Aside from the 2nd inning, Millens played a nearly flawless defensive game. Hitting standouts were Duffus with 2 HR (11) and 5 RBI (35). Ronnie Schmadel continued his hot hitting with three 2B and 4 RBI. As usual, Lou Denise ran wild on the bases legging out a 2B and a 3B. Millens late season surge has them poised to take over second place, with a big showdown with the Bees coming on 7/15. Around the league:
Despite the blistering heat and a shortage of players, Heritagenergy got off to a fantastic start. Heritage put 7 runs on the board in the top of the first. Millens chipped away at the lead little by little, scoring 4 and 2 in the subsequent innings. Millens finally broke out in the 5th inning, taking the lead with a 9 run inning. Heritage was quiet in the final two innings, making the final score 15-11. Hitting standouts for the night were Fred Duffus, 3-4, HR (9) 3 RBI, Derek Snyder, 4-4, 2B, 2RBI, Erik Fisher 3-3, and Phil Denise 3-4. Honorable mention goes to 2B Charlie Glass, who will now play with the team for the remainder of the season. With both first place teams losing, Millens moved within a game of first. Around the league:
Even a blinding sun couldn't prevent Millens from making sure that departing 2B Steve Reinacher went out on a high note on Friday. The sun contributed to several misplayed balls in LF, yet Millens managed a 12-5 win over The Cannonballs. Millens put the game away in the 7th with a five run outburst - three on a Fred Duffus home run off of Ross Pagliaro. Duffus' 5 RBI and Sweet Lou Denise's four hits lead Millens. Reinacher was 2-4 in his final game. Around the league:
A shorthanded Millens team played their trump card at exactly the right moment on Thursday. Missing several regulars, including injured SS Phil Denise, Millens struggled to find any consistency in the early going. Facing a two run deficit in the bottom of the sixth, Millens finally came alive. Lou Denise lead off with a single, and later scored on Erik Fisher's sac fly. Scott Liese followed with a huge walk to load the bases. Phil Castiglione was next to bat, but instead Millens sent Phil Denise up to the plate. Denise answered the call, ripping a two run single that proved to be the game winner. Despite Dave Cobey's base hit, Swim King went down quietly in the 7th - making the final 13-12. Around the league:
White Eagle outplayed Millens on Friday en route to a 17-8 victory. Despite a quiet early going, Millens pulled within three after the fifth inning. However, Millens couldn't contain a late White Eagle rally that blew the game open. White Eagle's star SS, Brian Clark, homered twice - including a mammoth shot late in the game that put the game safely out of reach for White Eagle. Around the league:
Even the Killer Bees' support could not bring a win to Heart Volkswagon. Fred Duffus' 2 homers and 7 RBI led Millens in a decisive 19-12 victory. Other standouts were Ronnie Schmadel (5-5) and Derek Snyder (5-5, 4 RBI). Millens mustered 22 hits in the contest. Around the league:
For six innings Scott Liese played beekeeper, holding the so called "Killer" Bees to a measly five hits. Millens went into the final frame with a 7-3 lead. Home runs by Kevin Terkelson and Sam Keller capped a six run seventh for the Bees. Millens went down quietly in the bottom of the inning, making the final score 9-7. Around the league:
Usually known for his bat, Fred Duffus' pitching performance helped propel Millens' to a 18-14 victory over American Legion. Missing key regulars Tony Troccia and Scott Liese, Millens had recovered from an early 12-2 deficit to pull within 5 going into the final frame. In the midst of 11 consecutive batters reaching base safely, Steve Reinacher's double tied the game at 14. Legion pitcher Al Alberts intentionally walked red hot Phil Denise to load the bases, chosing instead to pitch to an 0-10 Von Ahouse. Von rewarded Alberts' generosity with a game winning two run single. Georgedust Resso added a two run single of his own, and Millens went into the bottom of seven with a four run lead. Erik Fisher's circus catch in LF keyed the 1-2-3 inning, giving Millens it's second straight victory. Around the league:
Millens broke out the whipping stick on Thursday, belting an amazing 39 hits en route to a 35-17 victory. Fred Duffus, fired up by tauntings from the upstart Killer Bees, lead the way with three monster shots and 10 RBI. Facing strange defensive alignments, Kevin Jones stroked 5 hits in 5 at bats, inlcuding a key double. Erik Fisher and Steve Reinacher both added 5 RBI. Both Phil (4-5) and Lou Denise (5-6, HR) complemented last week's stellar debut. A close 12-8 game after 4, Millens put up 16 runs in the 6th to seal the victory.
Several team records were tied or broken, including the 35 runs, 39 hits, Fred's 3 HR and 10 RBI, and Kevin/Lou/Fred's 5 hits each. Around the league:
Braving incliment and freezing weather, the BJ Cannonballs took Millens to the woodshed on Thursday - by a score of 22-9 in 4 innings. The Cannonballs pounded out 18 literal frozen ropes, and Millens seemingly made an equal amount of fielding miscues in the debacle. Adding injury to insult, LC Charlie Glass went down midgame with a calf injury and will likely be out of action for a month or more. On the bright side, new additions Lou and Phil Denise had strong debuts. Both Phil and Lou were a perfect 2-2. Before it was over, Steve Reinacher drove in 2 runs on his first career 3B, and Fred Duffus added his usual HR. Around the league:
