2001 Hammer Electronics With players backing out of commitments just days before the season was to start, four of the best pickups of all time literally fell into the lap of Hammer. First, returning after a three-year absence was founding member John Finch. Other noted additions Erik Fisher and Partha Buragohain became two of the top contributors. Furthermore, weeks into the season, Joe Ciccarelli became the regular shortstop. Still, there was a struggle for coherence. The final piece to the puzzle was Fred Duffus, who homered in his first official at bat. Hammer proceeded to win nine of the final thirteen games – including the final six games in must win fashion - to procure a 3rd seed in the playoffs. All good things come to an end however, and the Throttlenecks destroy Hammer in the championship finale. An excerpt from the team’s weekly newsletter the "Weekly Reader" Subject: Weekly Reader Date: 8/9/01 2:34 PM "Hammer Stages Improbable Comeback" Last night, nearly a month to the day from when Hammer dropped to 4-8 with a devastating loss to Binky's on a Monday night, Hammer Electronics showed their "true grit" by clinching a playoff spot. After losing that game on 7/9, the question was asked "do we still have a chance?". And the reply was "if we win, we're in". As if winning all of the last six games would be an easy task for a team that had lost twice as many games as it had won. In the meantime, something happened. Hammer went from a team that could barely get everyone on the field on time, playing shoddy defense at best, to a team that dominated each opponent that stepped in it's way. They buried the competition by an average score of 13-6 in those six games, and in the last game of their season, clinched a playoff berth.
