1997 Mariner's Harbor (B) Superior Tree (D)
Flush with success, the amount of people interested in playing was unbelievable. Rather than try to cram everyone onto one team and turn the rest away, Derek had the novel idea of having TWO TEAMS. Alot of the spot players and some of the regulars were lumped together on a D league team brandished "Superior Tree". Unfortunately, that was the only thing "superior" about them. With 24 players between the two teams, getting extra players was tough and both teams were spread thin. In the end, the decision to create the second team was probably the most pivotal choice in the organization's history. Without the second team, this would have likely been the final year of existence. Mariner’s Harbor added young Barry Gorsline, Dave Rask and Wally Wright to create and even better team than last year’s dominant squad. With a third consecutive first place finish, the formidable opponent in the championships was Steven’s Jets, a mainstay in the Kingston League for 30 years. Steven’s Jets proceeded to stomp the youngsters and take the title. Roster Tony Troccia, Joe Berry, Eddie Alvarez, Rich Russell, Derek Snyder, Barry Gorsline, Chad Plonski, Wally Wright, John Finch, Dave Rask, Watcher Davide, Jimmy Dixon Memorable Moments
The Superior Tree team had much less success. It did feature the unveiling of Charlie Freer, probably the team’s best player. Charlie’s all around hustle on the bases weren’t enough to keep them in enough games to make a difference. The most classic moment of their season was undoubtedly the final game versus undefeated Athlete’s Foot. In the bottom of the seventh inning, tensions ran high and 3B Keith Nickerson was ejected from the game. With two outs, his replacement Stivic Burt was hit the ball. Stivic fielded the ball cleanly, laughed at the runner has he double pumped, and threw him out by a step at first base to seal the victory. Roster Gary Felice, Charlie Freer, Tommy Metzger, Stivic Burt, Keith Nickerson, Rob Hand, Brian Lowe, William Studt, Scott Liese, Garrett Liese, George Resso, Joe Whalen, Babe Lake Memorable Moments
