DVAR - Read This

Delaware Valley Akita Rescue

Thank you for your interest in adopting an orphaned Akita from DVAR. Please do your homework about this breed! The best book on the market about Akitas is: AKITA - TREASURE OF JAPAN by Barbara Bouyet; however this book is currently out of print but you may be lucky enough to get one of the last copies by contacting DOG BOOK CATALOG at 1-800-776-2665. Barbara's newest book is currently available and you can buy it through this same source.

Now, to start the adoption process, please do the following:

  1. Read all the information about Akitas in this packet of information.

  2. Fill out the adoption application (coming soon)

  3. Send your application fee of $25 and your application to DVAR, P.O. Box 103,

    Carversville, PA 18913

Once we have received your application and fee, we will call you to arrange a meeting between you and the orphans you are interested in, or the orphans we feel would be appropriate for your household. There is a $200 adoption fee, (minus your application fee it equals $175) and all Akitas that leave DVAR are altered (spayed/neutered), up to date on shots, had a thyroid test and heart worm test, and are freshly groomed. You will receive a vet record with each dog you adopt and copies of any paperwork we received from the owner if the dog is giveup, This $200 adoption fee does not in any way constitute a profit for us, for most dogs cost us far more than the $200 adoption fee covers; but we need to at least try and cover some of our vetting & dog food expenses!

Please understand that due to the high volume of phone calls we receive, we need to receive the application back before returning phone calls and answering questions. It's not that we don't want to speak to you, it's that if we spent hours a day on the phone with everyone who called, we would never have time for the dogs.

If after reading the paperwork enclosed you feel an Akita is not the dog for you, please note that there is probably a rescue for just about any breed you feel would better suit your lifestyle. Through the All-Breed Rescue Alliance, Inc. network, which DVAR is a part of, you may be able to find the right breed. Please ask us about ABRA if you decide not to adopt an Akita.

If you do fill out the application and return it to DVAR, please give us approximately 7 to 10 days to get back in touch with you. We will mail you information on how and when you can meet the dogs that are available. When you receive the information, there will be several appointment dates given -please call Margie's answering machine (215)297-5970 and leave a message stating which date you will be able to attend, and be prepared on that date to bring your ENTIRE FAMILY and ANY OTHER DOG YOUR ADOPTED AKITA WILL NEED TO LEARN TO LIVE WITH!!!

Thanks for choosing DVAR and for caring about our orphans.

Margie, DVAR
