The Emperor Hadrian built a luxurious country estate here covering an area of 120 hectares, it was the largest of all the imperial villa complexes. Villa D�Este, conceived and commissioned by Cardinal of Ferrara Ippolito D�Este, when was elected Governor of Tivoli. The whole complex structured by a severely geometric system of path, ramps, and steps constantly alternated by fountains, grottoes, and arched walks are defined as one of the peaks of European garden concept."
