"In the rolling hills of Umbria, stands the exceptionally well-preserved medieval town of Assisi, which is known primarily as the birthplace of St. Francis. Little is known regarding the its origin, but the town was a well-known sacred place for at least 2000 years before the beginning of Franciscan era. The great artists of the immediate succeeding centuries after Francis and Clare, who were commissioned to memorialize the two saints and decorate their Assisi churches, made Assisi the art museum that it is today."
