Examination of Conscience

  • Magnitude of sin

  • All sin is not equally great.
Mortal sin (deadly sin) is a severe wound to the soul and separates us entirely from God
    and incurs eternal damnation.
Venial sin is of lesser magnitude and slows the growth toward God.
A person commits a mortal sin, by his free will, does grievous dishonor to God or wrongs his
neighbor in weighty matters or causes injury to himself or neighbor.
A person commits a venial sin who only injures something of small importance or slightly harms
something of great importance and does so unconsciously or unwittingly.
All mortal sins are not of equal magnitude. the most heinous sins are sins against the Holy Ghost and
    cry to heaven for vengeance.
All venial sins are not all of the same importance. Imperfections are faults which are not due to a bad will,
    but due to human frailty.
Mortal sin deprives man of sanctifying grace, and delivers him to the power of the devil.
Venial sin gradually leads to mortal sin and eventually the loss of sanctifying grace.
