| "The whole is greater than the sum of the parts." I became interested in the triathlon at a seminar given by a local Pro at the Fort Collins Club in Northern Colorado in 1986. The Pro suggested we exchange phone numbers for training partners. I met the Captain of the master's swim team at Colorado State. And, I began running with a graduate student, who lettered in track. Highly motivated, I joined the university's Triathlon Club, raced in the annual Fort Collins, Glenwood Springs, Colorado State U, and Wyoming U triathlons. I audited Sports Science classes for four semesters. When I moved to Denver in 1998, I began training at Chatfield State Park. Typically, I cycle 120 miles, run 12 miles and swim 2 miles a week, during the Summer. My daily workouts are 2 hours long. I eat a normal healthy diet with extra protein. During workouts I replenish electrolytes with Ultima to keep my muscles loose and working smoothly. Training- The key to good training is long slow distance. Be patient and stay in your training zone. Once you reach a training plateau of 2 hours a day your gains will be profound. A best thing about being a triathlete is it distributes the work load over three major muscle groups! Speed will come naturally once you have established a base. Usually, 1.5 times the distance of your longest event. The important thing is to train every day, but never so hard it isn't fun. Take a day off, when you are worn out.
