| "Best New Name for a Theater Troupe: Mildred's Umbrella Apparently there's a bit of debate over how Houston's newest theater company, Mildred's Umbrella, got it's odd name. Founding members Jennifer Decker and John Harvey tell the story two different ways. She says they were perusing a literature book, looking for a name that was really interesting, when they stumbled upon a poem by Gertrude Stein called Mildred's Umbrella, He says Stein came to him in a dream in Ernest Hemingway's body. As hard as it might be to imagine Hemingway saying the words 'Mildred's Umbrella,' Harvey's version is obviously more theatrical. Either way, the name is simply dreamy." | THEATER AT IT'S BEST "Things Being at the Worst is a sexy, avant-garde production... Think Tom Stoppard on methamphetamines, and you'll land in the general ballpark of one of the most surprisingly sexy productions to push its way into Houston's avant-garde theater scene in quite some time...Mildred's Umbrella,(is) the fledgling group that produced this madness...one of the most inventive and truly avant garde shows of the year." - Lee Williams, The Houston Press Full Review |

| Bloody Good "In a fascinating production of Mac Wellman's idiosyncratic adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, Mildred's Umbrella Theater Company takes us into its arms and smothers us with love of theater... Everything's of a piece in Wellman's worldview, especially the amazing ensemble cast, which throws itself into the creepy goings-on with panache and conviction... It's a tasty bite of theater you won't soon forget." DL Groover The Houston Press Full Review |
